Ask The Experts: What do I need to know about oven fires?

2/16/2021 (Permalink)

Most people aren't prepared 100% for a fire in their home or business. Even if you have the right tools on hand, fire and the devastation that it brings can leave you frustrated and confused about what you need to do next. Depending on the kind of fire, there are things you should know that can help you when a fire does occur. Today, we will discuss oven fires.

If the source of your kitchen fire is in the oven, keep these tips in mind:

  • Leave the oven door closed. The lack of additional oxygen can smother the fire and prevent it from spreading. Turn the oven off and allow it to burn out.
  • If the fire does not extinguish on its own, call 911. If it does, open your windows to improve ventilation.
  • Once the fire is out, and it has had time to cool, open the oven door carefully and remove the burnt baking pan. Let the smoke clear before you do anything else in the kitchen.
